Election Results Set Stage for Telecommunications Issues
|
November 8, 2006, Washington, D.C. -- Telecommunications issues are expected to confront the newly elected Congress that will take office in January 2007. Watershed changes in the telecommunications industry and the rapid introduction of emerging technologies mean that Congress is likely to consider a broad telecommunications bill that could mean sweeping changes for consumers.
Through this process, one important element that should not change is the access that Americans now have to affordable telecommunications services. Thanks to the Universal Service Fund, a mechanism that helps offset the cost of building, maintaining, and provisioning communication networks across the country, 94 percent of Americans are connected to telephone service the highest level in our history.
Rural Americans living in approximately 40 percent of the landmass of the United States are effectively served by more than 700 small and midsize communications companies that offer advanced services like broadband at affordable prices all because of universal service.
Shirley Bloomfield, a spokesperson for the Coalition to Keep America Connected, a broad coalition of school teachers, doctors, entrepreneurs, farmers, small business owners, grandmothers, communications and high-tech industry leaders, civic groups and organizations, and others, said, "We are confident that members of Congress will recognize the importance of universal service to millions of Americans that rely on it to receive affordable telecommunications services." Bloomfield continued, "Universal service benefits telephone customers across the country, in both rural and urban areas."
Many members of Congress have stated their strong support for universal service. Many others, especially those representing sizeable rural constituencies, are expected to voice similar support.
"Many new members of Congress were elected because they care about rural issues," Bloomfield says. "Supporting universal service is one of the most important steps they can take to demonstrate their commitment to rural Americans." In addition to providing affordable telephone service to rural areas, universal service enables hospitals, schools, libraries, and other vital institutions in these regions to be connected to high-speed Internet service essential in todays world. The Universal Service Fund also provides assistance to low-income consumers who order basic telephone service.
### The Coalition to Keep America Connected is dedicated to ensuring that all consumers have access to affordable telecommunications services and the latest technologies-no matter where they live. The effort is organized by four rural telecom associations, whose memberships include 700 small and midsize communications companies. Together these companies serve millions of consumers and 40% of the landmass across America. Visit us at www.keepamericaconnected.org. |
