The coalition will serve as a collective voice for rural telcommunications consumers who may be negatively impacted as Congress takes up re-writing the Communications Act. The coalition will provide policymakers and the public with comprehensive information about impact of universal service on rural communities and value of keeping rural America connected globally. The Coalition to Keep America Connected (www.keepamericaconnected.org) is made up of consumers, businesses, communications and high-tech industry leaders and other organizations from across the country, that believe in the importance of keeping all Americans connected through affordable telecommunications services and technologies. As part of the Coalition, [Insert telco] will be working to keep all Americans connected, by urging policymakers to adhere to three basic principles as they make modifications to the laws that govern communications in America: - Fairness - Urban, suburban and rural consumers alike deserve to stay connected to their families, friends, and the world through communications technologies.
- Affordability - Technology is only useful when it's affordable to consumers. Congress must ensure that all Americans can receive communications technologies at affordable prices.
- Access - Every American should have access to the latest, modern technologies, no matter where they live.
"[Insert telco] has helped to bring the latest telecommunications services and technologies to our community of [insert telco location], helping connect rural consumers to each other and to friends and loved ones throughout the nation and the world," said [insert telco leadership representative]. "We are proud to be working alongside other telcos, businesses and individual consumers to ensure continued access for all Americans, regardless of geographic location." Sample Press Release 2 August 2006 - USF at risk Reduction of Resource Could Threaten Consumer Access to Communications Technologies Universal Service support critical to [XYZ Telco's] ability to deliver latest communications innovations at affordable prices (Telco City, Date) - A critical resource that [Insert telco] relies on to help deliver the latest communications services and technologies to [telco community] is under fire-and rural consumers and our community could suffer as a result. The resource, known as the Universal Service Fund (USF), helps [telco] build and maintain the communications network infrastructure that consumers rely on to keep connected to friends and loved ones, and to opportunities for commerce, education and entertainment. USF support means [telco] can deliver the latest technological innovations-including [broadband applications, wireless applications, IPTV, etc.]-to our consumers at affordable prices. Without USF to help offset the high costs of connecting rural consumers and communities to the network, phone bills in [telco state] could rise an average of [customized dollar amount - see explanation below]** annually. The true costs of communication services in [telco community] could ultimately prove unaffordable to many of our citizens and local businesses. Right now, our nation's communications laws are under review in Congress-and certain policies under consideration could threaten the current level of USF support that [telco] receives. That's why [telco] has joined the Coalition to Keep America Connected, an organization dedicated to ensuring affordable communications technologies are available to all consumers-no matter where they live. [Telco] and the coalition are working to educate policymakers about the vital role community-based telecom providers such play in keeping rural America connected to the world. USF has enabled [telco] to maintain the network that is essential to our community's connectivity, and it will be even more essential in the future as [telco] strives to accommodate consumer demand for the latest communications advancements. Individuals may join the Coalition to Keep America Connected, lending their voices to the debate and helping to ensure that universal service support is available well into the future.
